Whenever you are on an outdoor adventure it is a good idea to have a gas lantern with you along with a couple back up cylinders of fuel and mantels. Gas lanterns are extremely reliable and have been a popular outdoor lantern for years. I am sure many of you can think back to childhood days and you had a gas lantern around at that time as well.
To safely use a gas camping lantern you need to use it either outside or in an area that is open with plenty of ventilation. A good place for a gas lantern is in a screen house or hanging from a tree limb. You never want to use a gas lantern in a tent or camper. You also do not want to leave a gas lantern within reach of a child as a gas lantern can get very hot and cause severe burns. Despite these risk factors outdoor gas lanterns remain extremely popular.
The reason the gas lantern is so popular is for many reasons. A camping gas lantern gives off an incredible amount of light. The light given off reaches farther than the light from a battery operated lantern and it is brighter than that of a battery operated lantern. One outdoor gas lantern will allow campers to be able to see most of their campsite depending on the size of the campsite. Another reason is because the gas lantern lasts longer than a battery operated lantern. A gas lantern runs off a propane cylinder and one cylinder will last for many hours. Far longer than the lifespan of one set of batteries like with the battery operated lanterns. Also a propane cylinder only runs a few dollars as opposed to several dollars for the batteries. The gas lantern is economical in regards to fuel as well as cost of the lantern itself.
Camping gas lanterns are made to last. There are many brands and they all last a similar period of time. Yes, the propane runs out and needs to be replaced, however the propane for a gas lantern is very cheap. The mantles occasionally need to be replaced but again that is something that only costs a few dollars. The gas lantern is a good buy for the long run.
The gas lantern is also very simple to use. In most cases you no longer need to even use a match to light a gas lantern. Gone are the days of lighting a match and pumping the fuel X amount of times. You simply turn on the fuel and hit the ignition button a time or two and you have light. With lanterns like a Coleman lantern, you are able to adjust the brightness as well.. When the light starts to go dim it is time to change the propane cylinder on the gas lantern. It is overall a very basic product that has changed very little over the years other than the lighting process. This, along with a portable stove, is an outdoor adventure must have. Of course, if you don’t like using gas lanterns, you could always get a rechargeable lantern.
